Adenomyosis

General information to help you understand your body and prepare for your appointments. This is not medical advice.

What it is

Adenomyosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows within the muscular wall of the womb itself. This can make the womb larger and thicker, and can lead to heavy, painful periods. It's related to endometriosis but is a distinct condition, and it's thought to be more common than once believed.

Common symptoms

Some people have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they often include:

  • heavy periods that last longer than usual
  • severe period pain or cramping
  • ongoing pain or pressure in your lower tummy or pelvis
  • bloating or a feeling of fullness in your tummy
  • pain during sex

Why it's often missed

Adenomyosis shares many symptoms with endometriosis and heavy periods, which are still too often treated as something to simply put up with. It usually can't be seen without imaging such as an ultrasound or MRI, so it can go unrecognised for a long time.

How tracking helps

A clear record of how heavy and how painful your periods are, and how that changes over time, gives you and your doctor something concrete to work with. A Doctor's Report summarises your cycle and symptoms so you can walk into an appointment with evidence, not just a rough memory of a bad week.

Where to get support

If your periods are very heavy or painful, speak to your GP.
